FAQ

Q: Can anyone join Leicester Speakers Club ?
A: Yes, all welcome and you are invited to attend a couple of meetings before making any commitment to join.

Q: What happens on the first evening for prospective members?
A: You are made welcome and introduced to the club members present.  We usually start the evening with club updates, a topics session where people will stand up and talk ‘off the cuff’ for three minutes on a given subject.  It is an ideal way to get started in public speaking, you are encouraged to take part but you don’t have to.  Topics subjects may include speaking about your holidays, heroes or favourite foods.  This follows with a short break, a chance to catch up with other members, then we go onto the main speeches, usually about three short sessions, followed by very kindly phrased feedback.  Don’t worry we don’t bite!

Q: What time does it start ?
A: For the meeting we arrive at 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start.  The meeting typically runs until 9.00pm.

Q: Is there a cost?
A: Your first 3 meetings are free and without any obligation.  After this there is a membership fee, which is pro-rata depending on when you join.  We all pay this a membership to cover things like room hire and other bits. There are concessions available for students, please ask us for further details.

Q: Where do you meet ?
A: We are club based in the city for around 50 years and tend to try different places around and near the city centre. This year we have chosen to meet at Leicester City Council’s African Caribbean Centre, a warm, vibrant and inviting venue (which is located very close to the Train Station, bus routes and ring road). There is car parking adjacent to the centre (first come first serve) and some street parking outside the centre.
