Today after many years I am one of the Senior Members of this friendly club, however when I joined as a younger man I was terrified of speaking in public, but a few years later with the help and encouragement of club members! I have gained confidence and can communicate more effectively which has helped me in my business career.  The club has a structured learning system without any pressure on members.  It is an enjoyable experience especially as one masters the techniques of public speaking.  Now I have great satisfaction and pleasure in helping and advising new and older members.

I joined Leicester Speakers Club primarily to help with developing my confidence when delivering presentations at work and also to meet new people.  Since joining over a year ago I have noticed that my confidence and ability to present and speak to groups of people both in my professional and working life has noticeably improved.  When I attended the first meeting I found the experience nerve wracking but my fears and anxieties were soon allayed as I found the club members were really supportive and friendly.  I threw myself into the deep end and delivered a brief speech during my first meeting.  I remember the evaluation of the speeches throughout the evening including my own, were undertaken in a supportive and positive manner, which gradually over subsequent meetings have really helped to build up my confidence.  Observations for improvements suggested by evaluators are also delivered in a constructive way and have really helped my personal development.  The club meetings provide a safe and supportive environment and you soon find yourself enjoying and learning from informative and humorous speeches delivered by other members.  Looking forward to the 10th September!

Public Speaking had been an interest for me and over time has become a hobby.  I like the warm and comfortable atmosphere at the Leicester Speakers Club – the group consists of a mix of people from different backgrounds, abilities, and walks of life from across Leicester and beyond.

The group all get together essentially with a similar purpose: to practise and improve their ability to stand-up and speak in front of the audience.  Over the past few years I have personally witnessed people come in with inhibitions ranging from social anxiety to stammering, to the those with low-confidence and actually developing into confident speakers.

Increasingly, I was being asked to present training to staff and clients at work.  Although I am normally confident I was very nervous about public speaking.  This was really limiting me so I thought that I would try to do something about it.  I joined the Leicester Speakers Club and was welcomed to a sea of eighteen gentlemen as I swished through the door, they made me very welcome and I am glad to say that since then we have a few more women members as well.  I am now getting to grips with public speaking, and I try to ‘take any gig I can get’ in order to improve my skills.  It took me a while but I now enjoy giving presentations and made a few new friends in the process.  I would recommend anyone who has a fear of public speaking or simply lacking a little in confidence to come along and give it a try.
